Breaking Update: Mohammed Siraj Named in India’s T20 World Cup Squad

Siraj

India have made a late change to their T20 World Cup squad, with Mohammed Siraj set to replace Harshit Rana, who has been ruled out due to a knee injury. The development comes just days before India’s tournament opener, giving Siraj an unexpected opportunity to return to the shortest format on the global stage.

Injury Setback for Harshit Rana

Rana suffered the injury during India’s warm-up clash against South Africa at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. The young fast bowler twisted his right knee and experienced discomfort after bowling just one over. Although initial hopes suggested it might not be serious, further scans confirmed that he would not recover in time for the tournament.

Suryakumar Yadav Hints at Change

India captain Suryakumar Yadav stopped short of officially ruling Rana out but strongly indicated that the situation was not encouraging.

“He is still not ruled out but looks doubtful,” Suryakumar said ahead of the opener. “He had a niggle during the warm-up game, and the situation is not very encouraging.”

A Fresh Chance for Siraj

For Siraj, the recall brings a second opportunity in T20 cricket. He last featured in T20Is against Sri Lanka in 2024, which was also Gautam Gambhir’s first series as head coach.

In domestic T20 cricket, Siraj impressed in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, claiming seven wickets in four matches at an economy rate of 5.81. Overall, he has represented India in 16 T20Is, picking up 14 wickets.

Why Siraj Over Other Options?

Although Prasidh Krishna was also in contention, Siraj’s international experience and ability to handle pressure situations ultimately worked in his favor. His skill with the new ball and relentless intensity provide India with stability and flexibility in their bowling plans.

What This Means for India

India lose an emerging pace talent in Rana but gain experience in Siraj. The team management will now recalibrate their bowling combinations depending on conditions and opposition.
